What do you believe? Beliefs are real to the individual, they don’t need to be provable and they don’t need to make sense. People are willing to kill others for their beliefs and many are willing to die for their beliefs. The thing to realize about beliefs is that they are not intended to match existing reality. They are intended to provide a motivation and a vision so that your actual behavior can begin to develop and rise to meet them. Robert Dilts, Changing Belief Systems with NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)
The question again, what do you believe and do your beliefs empower you? I am going to explore one belief area and that is what do you believe about your health? Do you believe that you can be in control of your health and that you can be healthy, or do you believe that you need the medical for your health. A few years ago I wrote an article about a non-empowered health belief, "If We Don’t Get Our Drugs, We Will Die". A bus filled with drug seeking passengers was traveling to Canada to buy prescription drugs, because they could not afford to purchase them in the U.S. In an interview, one of the passengers said that if she didn’t get her drugs, she would die. This incident and interview took place about eleven years ago, as an episode of 60 Minutes. What I got from the program wasn’t that drugs cost too much in the U.S. (the intent), instead, I heard one of the most dis-empowered beliefs possible, utter dependence on the medical and its drugs for life (If I/we Don’t Get Our Drugs, We Will Die). As a non-user of the medical with its drugs and procedures, I found such a dis-empowered belief sad, shocking and found it much too common. Why not develop empowering beliefs? Why not devlop and have beliefs that give you more control, save you some money AND keep you truly healthy?
Placebos depend on beliefs for their effectiveness. A placebo usually is a pill/medication that doesn’t contain active ingredients (no drugs, chemicals, medications), that is 30% to 50% (and more) as effective as the medications/drugs they are tested against. If the placebo is red, cost a lot, is prescribed by an individual who is wearing a white lab coat, in a positive manner (such as this will work great), it becomes even more successful. Placebos are the most well researched non-medications and medications there are and they work well. If we believe something, there is a very good chance that it will work. Again, why not believe in what empowers you, makes you more independent and more in control you can be successful with empowered health care beliefs. You can learn not to die if you don’t have the medical.
If you are consistent in the belief (true belief) that you will have a good life, you will have a good life, if you are consistent in the belief that life is difficult and that they are out to get you, you will have a difficult life. Do this little exercise: write your top five or ten beliefs and after each put a plus (+) if you believe it is empowering and a minus (-) if it is dis-empowering, then write a short explanation, why. Then, have someone close to you put in the +s and -s. If from this exercise, you develop a question about some of your beliefs and why you have them, you have a good possibility of changing them to empowering beliefs. Discovering and using empowering beliefs is a part of a life long journey you will enjoy. If you believe that you have arrived and you are happy with your beliefs and that they are working for you, I wish you well. Robert Brown
